Smile, Look in the Eye, Say Hello

Sitting with the Lord and thinking about the special people we met on our journey of cancer treatment. I would often come home and journal about people that we met and the events that happened at the cancer center. Early on, the Holy Spirit impressed upon me to always make it a point to smile, look people in the eye and say hello to random strangers when we entered the waiting room. I knew the trepidation and anxiety this journey brought with it so I did what I’d want others to do to us.

Smile, look us in the eye and say hello.

This small gesture often opened the door for people to feel comfortable approaching us and talking to us. Like the classy little senior lady who was there with her son. They sat across the area from us. The volunteer who was there with his guitar came over and asked for song requests. He sang and played “He touched me” and “I’ll fly away.” I often videoed him to send to my family about what a blessing it was that day at the cancer center. The son looked at his Mom and said “that’s a first.” I explained that he always came through to sing to us. Mom smiled and just started talking about their journey to us. Then her son and Stephen were called back for labs at the same time. She immediately moved to the seat beside me sharing more intimately about their journey. She was so lively and optimistic for her son. I was enthralled by her faithful support to be there every week for her son who was in his forties. She explained that he’d lost down to 89 lbs at some point and she described how he was eating again. Her eyes lit up when she said, “I just love to see him eat!” We remarked about the small things that we no longer take for granted like an appetite. When son came back and saw her sitting by me. He smiled and said “I see you found a friend.” He said I knew she’d move over there. We laughed! He said I hope we all get to sit by each other in the treatment room. When they called him back for treatment first, he looked back and said “don’t forget to find us back there.” It warmed our hearts so much. So I prayed for him and his Mom this morning. I prayed for the guitar playing volunteer and other people we met as I read my notes. Holy Spirit reminding me that a smile, a hello, a look into a stranger’s eyes might turn out to be our greatest blessing! I’m more determined to stay kind. Yes there are some mean folks out there but I’m not going to be one of them. I told the Lord I’m not walking around in fear of others. I believe that a little kindness goes a long way! If I follow His lead, He will give me discernment and He won’t steer me wrong. Plus I belong to Him so my life is not my own. That revelation sets me free to be kind, to love and to live!

Sharing my morning musings… Smile, look people in the eye and say hello. Watch it ricochet back to you! What a wonderful world this would be!
